AKVILE ANGLICKAITE
1982 Klaipeda. Lives in Vilnius
I am an artist, digital colour print, 2007
Akvile is a Lithuanian artist working mostly in the field of photography. For Consequences and Proposals she produced a series of portraits of young art professionals, who do jobs that do not correspond with their actual education. For example, a girl who graduated in art history works as manicurist or a guy who studied media arts picks up trolleys in supermarket just to make money for living.
I am an artist reflects the situation in European societies, where almost everyone has access to higher education, but at the same time there is not enough people to do "dirty jobs". In the countries which do not have former colonies and/or which have a strict migration law and not very attractive economical situation, the less needed professionals are forced to make money in "dirty jobs". So the "weekend artists" are born – art making becomes a hobby, but who cares...
