JULIA WOLFF

1982 Heidelberg. Lives in Stuttgart

State of Mind. Photo, 2007

Julia Wolff uses very different images in order to talk about memory and identity: she could be trying to learn by heart the text of a slightly politically incorrect TV-series The Muppets and perform it as a monologue. But she could also be making earnest and wholehearted photo portraits of her grandparents. Julia's grandfather loves to talk about war and his youngster years – usually nobody bothers to listen his detailed stories with precise data and clear morale. The grandmother who used to have a brilliant memory, lost all her memories as well as the ability to speak fluently after a stroke. It was only after her grandmother's sickness that the artist started to appreciate the memory her grandfather has to offer.
State of Mind consists of two paired photos: the grandfather next to a meticulously organised table shelf from his workshop and the grandmother next to a photo of a stack of firewood fallen over.
