The Making of Utopia, video, 60 min, 2006

The Making of Utopia is a film between documentary and fiction: the artists researched utopian communities in Australia – Bodhi Farm, Dharmananda, Equilibrium and Moora Moora – and challenged each of them with a proposal to conduct a film-making workshop. The work consists of four case studies and four fictional short stories created collectively by the members of each community.
Decision-making process plays a central role in each short film – how to maintain the communal reality, how to go on with the life together in a legitimate way. A community might be seen as a social experiment of voluntary living together in the best possible way, but also as a mini-society trying to keep its existence with the tools of democracy. It is stated in the film that communal reality might not be suitable for everybody – vice versa – it is very difficult, but it is possible even in capitalist society. The Making of Utopia shows that there are alternative ways of living, it is all upon our own decision.

The screening starts on the hour.
