The Heart of the Operation. Digital colour print, installation, 2007

Karl Larsson works mainly with texts, printed materials, spatial arrangements and gestures. Editorial practice, printing and publishing play a central role in his artistic practice.
The installation The Heart of the Operation consists of a photograph of a printing press – the Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 102-4-P that is also used by the well renewed and hard working printing house Printon in Tallinn – and a compilation of texts focusing on the work premises of a Swedish poet who has not been published yet. The crucial moment for the printing company as well as for the poet is publishing. To be published or to publish is what defines their professional activity. On the other hand, printing is an industry that is regulated by market rules. Taking into account that many clients of Estonian printing houses are from Scandinavia, The Heart of the Operation also talks about global economy and its functioning principles.
